Our meiotic yeast experiments are performed in isogenic diploid strains made by mating two parental haploid parents. The parents are referred to in the lab as being either from the “X” or “Y” lineage. All X strains are in principle genetically identical except for the differences noted in their genotypes. The same is true for all Y strains. With help from Michael Dresser we have sequenced X (X55) and Y (Y169) parents and archived the complete sequence of each chromosome and the mitochondrial DNA with Entrez. Comparison of the complete sequences reveal dispersed single nucleotide polymorphisms that can be useful in genetic mapping experiments.
